Funding a LGBTIQ peak body to provide a voice for our community
Ever wondered why we have multicultural commissions, offices for women, ministers for indigenous affairs, disability discrimination commissioners but none of the above for sex and gender diverse communities?
Victoria needs funding for a peak body to better support, protect and represent LGBTIQ Victorians. LGBTIQ Victorians face an increased risk of discrimination, harassment, violence, bullying, poor physical and mental health outcomes, homelessness and suicide. Yet there is no government-funding for a peak body to adopt a systematic approach to improving the lives of LGBTIQ Victorians.
A recent report on the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ Australians recommends government funding for increased support services and public education campaigns promoting diversity and challenging heterosexism.
The VGLRL campaigns for long-term and sustainable government funding for a LGBTIQ peak body to improve the lives of LGBTIQ Victorians through a range of projects providing support, advocacy, community education and other services.
