The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby

The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby works for and with the whole gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community to end discrimination and to achieve equality and social justice.

In 2017 the VGLRL conducted a survey with members of the LGBTIQ community. The survey was completed by attendees of Midsumma Carnival and Chill Out Festival. The survey was also available online between March and August 2017. In total 274 surveys were completed with participants representing diverse sections of the LGBTIQ community. In a joint submission to the Senate inquiry into the marriage postal survey, the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL) and New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (NSWGLRL) have called for electoral reforms to protect and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (‘LGBTI’) Australians. The joint submission highlights the vilification and abuse directed toward the LGBTIQ community. The VGLRL and NSWGLRL call for anti-vilification provisions to protect the rights and freedoms of LGBTIQ Australians and for the reinstatement of truth in advertising laws to prevent against misleading electoral material. Religious Freedom Submission
A joint submission by the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL), New South Wales Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (NSWGLRL) and the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council to the Turnbull Government’s Religious Freedom Review has found that there are 38,564 jobs in Victoria alone [1] that a worker can be fired from if they come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) at work. These include teachers, school staff, doctors and health workers.  It is also deeply concerning that recent legislation has provided religious exemptions against Intersex Australians despite there being no doctrinal basis for these exemptions.  Further religious organisations are not seeking religious exemptions for intersex people, so discriminatory legislation is being newly created that previously never existed. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Gender Diverse and Intersex (LGBTI) workers continue to face discrimination when seeking work and once they are in a job, despite the fact that it is unlawful. Every union and employer has a responsibility to challenge this discrimination. Click HERE to read a comprehensive guide for Unions and Employer Representatives on LGBTI issues.
